Adult Sunday School Class Leaders
Expectations Checklist

(Basic organization for traditional
Sunday morning classes)

Adult Class Teacher (Enlisted annually)

  • Personal daily devotional Bible reading and prayer
  • Participation in corporate worship with the congregation on a regular basis
  • Regular financial giving, preferably a tithe
  • Properly prepare weekly to facilitate a positive learning experience for adult learners who participate in the class Bible study (Preparation should positively reflect the teacher’s commitment to God and help engage the learners in an encounter with the Bible.)
  • Serve as a Christian role model for class participants
  • Guide the enlistment of other class leaders
  • Enlist and mentor an apprentice teacher that can be developed as a teacher for a new class
  • Cooperate with others to identify potential church ministry leaders from among class participants
  • Commit to participate in at least two appropriate leadership development opportunities a year
  • Provide leadership and support for Sunday School actions that can help the church reach new people for Bible study and Christian discipleship

Adult Class Ministry Coordinator (Enlisted Annually)

  • Serve as host to welcome guests and newcomers to the class.
  • Lead the class to connect with worship participants and invite them to participate in class activities
  • Lead the class to follow up with guest and absentees
  • Enlist and mentor class care leaders
  • Attend regularly the Sunday morning class sessions
  • Enlist and mentor at least one apprentice ministry coordinator
  • Coordinate class fellowships and activities outside of the Sunday morning class Bible study sessions that will help to connect new people with the class
  • Coordinate class ministry activities
  • Commit to participate in at least two appropriate leadership development opportunities a year
  • Serve as a Christian role model for class participants
  • Provide leadership to ensure that class records are maintained
  • Engage in regular personal devotional Bible reading and prayer
  • Pray for the class and teacher regularly

Adult Class Care Leaders (Enlisted as needed)

  • Keep up with the attendance and ministry needs of four to six people or couples as assigned by the class ministry coordinator
  • Contact each assigned class member who is absent before the next Sunday morning
  • Report any non-confidential ministry needs to the class ministry coordinator
  • Regularly contact assigned members expressing appreciation for their participation
  • Assist the class ministry coordinator with organization and implementation of class ministry
  • Engage in regular personal devotional Bible reading and prayer
  • Attend regularly the Sunday morning class sessions

Apprentice

  • Assist the teacher or ministry coordinator as needed
  • Prepare to assist in the start a new Bible study class as needed
  • Engage in regular personal devotional Bible reading and prayer
  • Attend regularly the Sunday morning class sessions
